About the Webinar Series
This series of lunchtime webinars will feature an in-depth look at design examples from SEAOC’s newly published 2015 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM) Volumes 1, 2 and 3. This will be your opportunity to hear directly from contributing authors of the example problems as they share their significant expertise and experience in the design area and underlying building code provisions of the new 2015 International Building Code (IBC). With built-in time for audience questions and answers at the end of each session, these unique sessions are sure to be useful to experienced and new engineers alike. All webinars will be held on consecutive Thursdays in January and February 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PST.

This seminar provides an overview of the concrete parking structure design example. In addition to an overview of the published design example, the author highlights seismic design challenges that are unique to concrete parking structures including the effects of ramps on lateral analysis and the consequences common beam and column layouts on design and detailing for ductility. The author also provides an in-depth discussion of the provisions of ACI 318-11 Sec. 21.13 for frame members that are not part of the seismic load resisting system. This section has particular application to parking structures in that the ramps between levels can result in short, shear-governed columns. However, the methodology is applicable to all concrete buildings that feature gravity beams and/or columns.

Mr. LeGrue has been with Hohbach-Lewin, Inc. since 2002 and is a Senior Project Engineer in their Eugene, Oregon office. His experience includes analysis and design of concrete structures using traditional and performance based methods. Over the last two years he has been designed or peer reviewed over a dozen multi-story concrete buildings including four parking garages. Prior to joining Hohbach-Lewin, Jeremiah developed probabilistic hazard assessments and loss projections for the re-insurance industry. He is a registered Structural Engineer in Oregon and California. Jeremiah has a Masters of Structural Engineering degree from Stanford University. He received his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University.
About the SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM)
The SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM), throughout its many editions, has served the purpose of illustrating good seismic design and the correct application of building-code provisions. The SSDM has bridged the gap between the treatment of topics in the building code and ASCE 7, the SEAOC Blue Book (Recommended Lateral Force Requirements and Commentary) and real-world decisions that designers face in their practice.
The SSDM uses example buildings to illustrate code-compliant designs engineered to achieve good performance under seismic loading. The examples address the full range of seismic design considerations, from conceptual level through details of connections and load path. In some cases simply complying with building-code requirements does not ensure good seismic response; here the SSSDM makes recommendations for exceeding the minimum code requirements in such cases, with discussion of the reasons for doing so.
The newly released 2015 SEAOC SSDM has updated and revised the examples for consistency with the 2015 edition of the International Building Code.
