SEAOC is pleased to offer this series of webinars that detail key examples in SEAOC’s 2012 IBC Structural Seismic Design Manual (SSDM). The first series will focus on Volume 2, Light-frame, Tilt-up and Masonry Buildings. Three example problems will be presented along with related material in a total of five webinar presentations.

This webinar will begin with the story behind the current concrete slender wall code provisions and what initiated recent code changes, and will continue with the current wall anchorage provisions to the diaphragm, the proper use of sub-diaphragms and continuity ties. Additionally the discussion will be tailored to wood and steel roof systems. And finally, some of the unique aspects of shear walls in tilt-up concrete buildings will be addressed. Numerous photos and graphics will be integrated into the presentation to illustrate many of the issues.
About the Speaker
John Lawson, S.E.
Contributing Author, SEAOC 2012 IBC SSDM Vol. 2
John Lawson is a licensed Structural Engineer and an Associate Professor in Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He has over 25 years of experience as a practicing Structural Engineer; and has overseen the technical design of over 100 million square feet of tilt-up concrete construction. He has a BS in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a MS in Structural Engineering from Stanford. Mr. Lawson is a member of ACI 551 (Tilt-up) and has been the author of the tilt-up design examples in the Structural/Seismic Design Manual since the 1997 UBC version.
