These webinars continue SEAOC’s series of seismic design examples problems using the provisions of the 2012 International Buildings Code (IBC). The webinars will present four examples of steel systems From Volume 4 of SEAOC’s Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM) Series. Design examples will be presented in detail, addressing not only main concepts, but also the nuts and bolts of seismic-resistant design. 

Webinars will be from 11:30 to 1:00 on consecutive Thursdays. A question and answer period will be provided at the end of each webinar.

In This Webinar

Given its substantial capacity for inelastic energy dissipation, the Eccentrically Braced Frame (EBF) is often the lateral-resisting system of choice for buildings constructed in high seismic regions. This system is considered a hybrid, in that it combines the stiffness of a concentrically braced frame with the ductility and energy dissipation of a moment frame. This presentation will summarize the design procedures for a six-story EBF office building, Design Example 5 of the SSDM series. The focus will be to emphasis applicable code provisions and accepted design implementation approaches. It is intended as a design illustration for the practicing structural engineer, though it will also be useful for building officials, educators and students.

About the Speaker

With over 23 years of experience, Dr. Adan is a nationally recognized structural and earthquake engineer. He is actively involved in the research and development of steel earthquake resisting systems and led the effort to prequalify the Kaiser Bolted Bracket steel moment-resisting connection. He is also an accomplished author of numerous engineering-related journal and technical papers. As past chair of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California's Steel Subcommittee, he continues to serve on many professional organizations including the American Institute of Steel Construction's Seismic Design Manual Subcommittee. For the SEAOC SSDM series, Dr. Adan authored the Volume 4, Design Example 5 (Eccentrically Braced Frame).
