These webinars continue SEAOC’s series of seismic design examples problems using the provisions of the 2012 International Buildings Code (IBC). The webinars will present four examples of steel systems From Volume 4 of SEAOC’s Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM) Series. Design examples will be presented in detail, addressing not only main concepts, but also the nuts and bolts of seismic-resistant design. 

Webinars will be from 11:30 to 1:00 on consecutive Thursdays. A question and answer period will be provided at the end of each webinar.

In This Webinar

This presentation will address steel seismic design in accordance with the 2012 IBC/2013 CBC. Specifically, will review the Buckling Restrained Braced Frame design example in Volume 4 of the 2012 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual. The authors will present the basic code provisions for Buckling Restrained Braces and illustrate through the example how a building can be designed to adhere to those provisions.  Specific requirements for conformance demonstration through testing will also be addressed.

About the Speakers

Anindya Dutta, S.E.
Senior Project Manager, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

Anindya Dutta has experience in structural and earthquake engineering.  He has provided analysis and design of a variety structures in high seismic zones.  Dr. Dutta’s experience also includes seismic evaluation and strengthening of low to high rise structures.  He has taught graduate and undergraduate level courses on concrete design and structural analysis at the State University of New York at Buffalo and is a regular lecturer at the San Francisco State University’s graduate program.  He has authored a number of technical reports and journal papers as well as served as a member of the review board for ASCE’s Structural Engineering Journal.

Kenneth T. Tam, S.E.
Senior Project Manager, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

Ken Tam is a Senior Project Manager at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger in San Francisco. With over 17 years of experience, he specializes in the structural design, evaluation, and seismic retrofit of wood, steel, and reinforced concrete buildings. His projects include telecommunication centers, biotechnology lab buildings, hotels, high-end residences, municipal courts, and K-12 schools. He has used buckling restrained braces on projects for new construction as well as for retrofit application. In recent years, he has been involved in a number of projects in Christchurch, New Zealand.  He has authored technical papers published in Engineering Journal and the Bulletin of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering.  He has also served on the ASCE 41-13 steel subcommittee.
