SEAOC SSDM Webinar: Steel Design Example 2 - Concentrically Braced Frame

Registration is closed for this event

About the Webinar Series

These webinars continue SEAOC’s series of seismic design examples problems using the provisions of the 2012 International Buildings Code (IBC). The webinars will present four examples of steel systems From Volume 4 of SEAOC’s Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM) Series. Design examples will be presented in detail, addressing not only main concepts, but also the nuts and bolts of seismic-resistant design.

Webinars will be from 11:30 to 1:00 on consecutive Thursdays. A question and answer period will be provided at the end of each webinar.

In This Webinar

The presentation will address the expected behavior of a well-proportioned Special Concentrically Braced Frame and design procedures intended to encourage that behavior and preclude potential non-ductile modes of behavior. Configuration and plastic mechanism analysis will be the main focus; some discussion of connection design will also be included.

About the Speaker

Rafael Sabelli S.E.
Principal, Walter P. Moore

Rafael is an award-winning, recognized industry leader in the development of seismic design solutions and seismic design regulations, and he continues to focus on improving how buildings resist earthquakes. Rafael is widely published on a variety of technical topics related to the seismic design of important buildings, and has been invited to make numerous presentations to his industry peers.  He is also a key figure in the steel industry and led the effort to develop and adopt design procedures for buckling restrained braced frames that ultimately led to being awarded the T.R. Higgins lectureship.  As past president of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California, he continues to serve in leadership positions on many professional organizations sharing his 19 years of experience in structurally-challenging projects. Rafael is a licensed structural engineer in the states of California, Nevada, and Washington. He earned his Master of Architecture and Master of Civil Engineering from the University of California in Berkeley. Rafael served as the project manager for development of the SEAOC SSDM series, as well as being the author of Volume 4, Design Example 2.
