These webinars continue SEAOC's series of seismic design examples problems using the provisions of the 2012 International Buildings Code (IBC). The webinars will present four examples of concrete systems from Volume 3 of SEAOC’s Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM) Series: Examples for Concrete Buildings. Design examples will be presented in detail, addressing not only main concepts, but also the nuts and bolts of seismic-resistant design. Webinars will be from 11:30 to 1:00 on consecutive Thursdays. A question and answer period will be provided at the end of each webinar.

In This Webinar

This seminar provides an overview of the concrete parking structure design example. This is a new example for the 2012 IBC edition of the Seismic Design Manual. In addition to an overview of the published design example, the author highlights seismic design challenges that are unique to concrete parking structures including the effects of ramps on lateral analysis and the consequences common beam and column layouts on design and detailing for ductility. The author also provides an in-depth discussion of the provisions of ACI 318-11 Sec. 21.13 for frame members that are not part of the seismic load resisting system. This section has particular application to parking structures in that the ramps between levels can result in short, shear-governed columns. However, the methodology is applicable to all concrete buildings that feature gravity beams and/or columns.

About the Speaker

Mr. LeGrue has been with Hohbach-Lewin, Inc. since 2002 and is a Senior Project Engineer in their Eugene, Oregon office. His experience includes analysis and design of concrete structures using traditional and performance based methods. Over the last two years he has been designed or peer reviewed over a dozen multi-story concrete buildings including four parking garages. Prior to joining Hohbach-Lewin, Jeremiah developed probabilistic hazard assessments and loss projections for the re-insurance industry. He is a registered Structural Engineer in Oregon and California. Jeremiah has a Masters of Structural Engineering degree from Stanford University. He received his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University.
