About the Webinar Series
These webinars continue SEAOC's series of seismic design examples problems using the provisions of the 2012 International Buildings Code (IBC). The webinars will present four examples of concrete systems from Volume 3 of SEAOC’s Structural/Seismic Design Manual (SSDM) Series: Examples for Concrete Buildings. Design examples will be presented in detail, addressing not only main concepts, but also the nuts and bolts of seismic-resistant design. Webinars will be from 11:30 to 1:00 on consecutive Thursdays. A question and answer period will be provided at the end of each webinar.
In This Webinar
The webinar provides an overview of the design of concrete diaphragm and collectors. In the design example, the four-story concrete building has a big opening in the center of the third floor diaphragm. The purpose of this example is to demonstrate a simplified approach to find the demands on the diaphragm (using a rigid diaphragm assumption) and collectors based on the IBC 2012. Design of diaphragm chords and collectors and detailing of these elements are also included in this example.
The diaphragm demands obtained from a simplified approach is then compared with the demands obtained by modeling the diaphragm as a semi-rigid element using shell elements. Conclusions based on the results are presented at the end of the example
About the Speaker
Badri K. Prasad, S.E.
Badri is a Vice President at TTG Engineers and serves as the Branch Manager of TTG’s Walnut Creek office. He is a registered S.E. in California and registered P.E. in Washington State. He has over 26 years of experience leading design teams in the design of various types of structures such as healthcare facilities, airports, biotechnology facilities, mid and high-rise structures, schools, seismic retrofit, among others. He is the past chair of SEAONC seismology’s concrete committee and was instrumental in publishing the committee’s work titled, “Concrete Slab as Collector Element”, in the 2008 SEAOC Blue Book. He is the author on the concrete example and project manager of NCSEA’s publication “Guide to the Design of Diaphragms, Chords and Collectors”. He is also the author of concrete design example in the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual. Currently, Mr. Prasad is working on the concrete example for the publication titled “Design Guide for Diaphragms and Collectors for Building with Irregularities”, to be published by NCSEA in the fall of 2016. He has published and presented papers at several seminars on buckling restrained braced frames and research papers on base-Isolation system.
